Exposure to nature and the ocean has enormous benefits for our well-being. Just being on or beside the sea is a beautiful way to decompress from our busy lives.
The benefits of reconnecting with nature are often called “Blue Health”.
Experience the sights, sounds, smells and sensations of being in nature as you paddle your kayak along the beautiful coastline around Jersey.
Novices are welcome. Paddle with your friends, family or just by yourself; private tours can also be booked. We paddle in small groups, so advance booking is advised.
Blue Kayak Tours spend about 1 hour on the water, and it’s long enough to see something new but not end up too tired, so you only need to be of average fitness.

Who are our “Blue kayak” trips for?
Blue Kayak tours are suitable for anyone who wants to reconnect with nature and seeks the joy of being in the outdoors.
Novices and families are welcome. We use both single and two-seater sit-on-top kayaks. If you want to use a 2 seater sit-on-top kayak, please request this when you book.
Experiencing the weather around us is part of the trip, and tours will still happen on a cloudy day. Even if a bit of rain or wind is forecast, we’ll just ensure you are kitted up in our wetsuits and paddle gear. As they say, there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing.
Our sit-on-top sea kayaks are stable, so there is no need to worry about capsize drills and “wet exits”. However, this is a water sport, and there is always the chance you might fall in, so don’t take cameras, mobile phones, car keys etc., afloat.
We supply long John style wetsuits (full-length sleeveless wetsuits) from child to XXL. Our wetsuits are less restrictive than traditional wetsuits and are a great way to keep you warm and comfortable afloat. We also supply windproof jackets (cagoules) and buoyancy aids.
Blue Kayak tours do not aim to paddle far or go very fast, so you only need to be of average fitness and can sit upright while paddling. You do not need to be a good swimmer if you feel okay when in the water. In the unlikely event of a capsize, you need to get back on board with assistance. This is like climbing out from the side of a swimming pool by pulling/sliding yourself onto the poolside (without pushing off the bottom of the pool with your feet).
If you or a member of your party are unsure about your fitness level or have an impairment, contact us. We’ll suggest a solution or adaptation, so you have a good experience. We are used to paddling with people of all abilities and ages.
If you have any health or medical matters, tell us in advance in case we need to arrange extra staff, extra kit or make any adaptations.
Heights and weights
For your enjoyment and safety, tell us your clothing size, so we’ll have the right size of kayak and kit for you.
If you weigh over 15.2 stone (96kg) or have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 33+, please tell us your height and weight because our kayaks are designed for different weight ranges.
If your BMI score is above 34 (or you weigh more than 17 stone/108kg), you must contact us before you book. We may suggest meeting in advance to check we have a suitable kayak and the correctly sized kit for you. BMI calculator.
Blue Kayak Itinerary
Blue Kayak Tours are about 1½ hours duration. With about an hour on the water, it’s long enough to see something new but not end up too tired.
Aim to arrive 10 minutes before the start time. Allow yourself time to get to the venue if you get stuck in traffic or need to find a parking place.
After meeting your guide, we’ll spend about 15 minutes changing into kayaking gear and getting a few top tips about how to paddle your kayak. We also include some safety advice from our British Canoeing trained staff.
Once you have carried your kayak to the water (if this is difficult, please ask our staff for help), we’ll head “into the blue” to experience nature and the rhythm of the ocean.
Trips are about 1 hour, and we don’t aim to turn this into a marathon or a race.
On the way, we usually see seabirds, marine life and some of the lovely coastline that surrounds our island home.
All guides are local residents who have considerable knowledge about the coastline and wildlife and know the best spots to chill out.
What to bring
We provide all water sports equipment, buoyancy aids and long John style wetsuits (full-length sleeveless wetsuits) from child to XXL size (ladies sizes 8-18). Our wetsuits are less restrictive than traditional wetsuits and are a great way to keep you warm and comfortable afloat. All equipment is washed after every use.
A desire to explore and have fun afloat.
If you prefer to use your own wetsuit, that is fine.
Swimming costume. Towel. Snack.
Fluids (water is best). Protect the environment – avoid bringing bottled water. Use a cycle bottle.
Sunblock (min SPF35) sunglasses and a hat or cap.
Sweatshirt or fleece style long-sleeved top to wear on the water, if needed. On warm and sunny days, a long-sleeved top may be enough, but you may prefer to add a bit of extra comfort by wearing one of our wetsuits and/or a windproof paddle jacket.
Plimsolls, trainers, flip-flops or wetsuit boots must be worn and remember some dry shoes to go home in.
We do not have changing facilities, and there are usually toilets and outdoor showers on most beaches.
Personal medication that you may need while kayaking. Instructors have waterproof storage boxes available.
If you’d like to use a two-seater (tandem) kayak to paddle with a friend, please request this when you book. We usually recommend adults paddle singe seater kayaks. Tandem kayaks are great fun for families with young children.
Please tell us in advance if you have any health, medical matters, or impairments. This will help us plan the trip, ensure we have the right equipment and make any adaptations for you.
Why kayaking is good for your mental and physical health

- Kayaking is a great way to develop your self-esteem by doing something different.
- Paddling is a form of ‘moving meditation’. You need to be in the moment to control your kayak. Just enough concentration is required to push the everyday thoughts into the background.
- Boost your vitamin D levels just by being outside and enjoying the space.
- Life looks different from the water. Paddling offers a unique perspective of the world, which you’re not often exposed to. Seeing the world from a different angle gives you a fresh outlook.
- You can meet new people to talk to, interact with and learn from.
