GOLD Status for Green Tourism

GTBS logoEco-friendly tourism in Jersey received another boost when Jersey Kayak Adventures were awarded the  Green Tourism GOLD Grade following an inspection.

The company was assessed against a range of criteria, including energy efficiency, waste management and environmental activities by the Green Tourism Business scheme. This national award encourages and supports businesses to introduce environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. The scheme is the national sustainable tourism certification scheme for the UK.

Each year the standards seem to go up, so getting GOLD is great news,” said Derek Hairon, director of Jersey Kayak Adventures. An area where the company scored was their strategy to encourage the use of public transport and cycling to departure points. Start times of tours frequently coincide with bus times and discounts are given when people arrive by bus.

Referring to the assessor’s report Derek Hairon continued:

Getting advice from national inspectors is an opportunity to find out what we do well and where we can do better. In some cases it’s simple things, which are easily overlooked, like asking clients to use cycle water bottles filled with tap water. Once afloat tap water tastes just as good as bottled mineral water and is far less wasteful. Plus: It saves money!”

Green tourism businesses are those actively engaged in reducing the negative environmental and social impacts of their tourism operations by actively engaging in socially and environmentally responsible actions

Within Jersey there only four organisations with gold awards.

Other companies with a Gold grade include: Durrell, Creepy Valley  and La Mare Wine Estate.
